What a Waste of Time

Description

Caustic, perhaps, but I feel is expresses my opinion rather well.

So my school's crackpot, Gay-Straight Alliance group recently alerted the student body to this "Day of Silence" nonsense. I, having no idea what the hell this is, go on the “About” section of the official website. Here's what it says:

Sponsored by GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, the National Day of Silence is a day of action in which students across the country take some form of a vow of silence to call attention to the silencing effect of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment in schools. Through their activities students can speak out against harassment and organize for change for their schools and communities.

Either I'm an idiot or these people can't write. I have no idea what they hell they were trying to convey when they wrote this paragraph. So I go on Wikipedia next:

The Day of Silence is the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network's (GLSEN) annual day of action to protest the bullying and harassment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students and their supporters. Students take a day-long vow of silence to symbolically represent the silencing of LGBT students and their supporters.

And Wikipedia has all the answers. God, I love that site. So apparently students are being silent for a whole day in order to "speak out” (see the oxymoron? :eyes:) against LGBTQA abuse.

WHAT THE FUCK?

Let me say something right here: I'm bisexual. I've never been bullied for my sexual orientation for the simple reason that I've never came out about it in real life. Even though I personally have not been bullied or anything, I still find this to be somewhat offensive and ignorant.

Anyone remember Spirit Day? They day back in October where people wore some hideous shade of colour between red and blue and essentially did nothing else? Yeah, Day of Silence is just like Spirit Day.

The purpose of Spirit Day was to raise awareness, no? At least that's what my school's Gay-Straight Alliance club told me. (Then again their knowledge is always questionable). Well, I'm pretty damned sure that a lot of people are aware the LGBTQA community is discriminated against. If not, get out from under that rock and see the real world. I can go on and on about how homosexuals et.al. have been discriminated against but I would be digressing.

The sentiment behind Day of Silence is nice but the execution is all wrong. Exactly how is silence going to help you speak out? Part of the reason why, not only homosexuals but many other demographics of people (black, white, Jewish, Asian, Scasndinavian, Walsh, et.al) have been discriminated against is because they don’t speak up and don’t fight back. Why take the passive route and be silent? Why not speak up? Why not fight for your deserved equal rights?

Silence isn’t the answer. Vocalization is the answer. Being abrasive is the answer. Fighting back is the answer. African Americans fought back during the American Civil War and President Lincoln granted them Emancipation. Mulatto and black Haitians fought back against the French and got their emancipation. They didn’t stay silent and hope someone would help. They got of their asses, took the abrasive route and kicked some ass. Granted, violence isn’t always the answer, but the fact that these people decided enough is enough and fought back should be inspiration enough.

Silence shows passivity. It shows that you really don’t give enough of a damn to fight for what you believe in and what rights you deserve as a human being. Day of Silence seems to be a spit in the face of the LGTQA community who strives for equal rights. That’s why it can kiss my ass. And that’s why I’m not gonna be silent on April 15th. Feel free to prove me wrong, but I’m sticking to my guns until someone comes up with a pretty damn convincing argument.

(I'm sure this was repetitive to the point where it hurts, so I hope I conveyed my point well enough)

Just because you weren't bullied doesn't mean that no one else is. People are literally MURDERED for that shit.
